Victorian Schoolroom

Our own Victorian Schoolroom is the in old Clifton Road Junior School and was funded by the Heritage Lottery. The room has been restored as closely as possible to its original late 19th century style, with authentic paint colours, furniture and decoration and now offers a unique learning environment to local schoolchildren.
Here, children dressed in simple costumes they can wear over their clothes, are transported back in time to a long-lost Victorian world where lessons, teaching methods and discipline were very different to those of today! ‘Miss Green’, the teacher, remains in Victorian character throughout the one-hour lesson, as she instructs the children in a range of Victorian school day activities ranging from reciting times tables to writing on slates and with dip pens.
Recent comments on the classroom after a school visit:
“Children lived the time and said it was just like what was in the picture”.
“A great selection (of activities) – children remembering them all and experiencing some of them again in our class”.
“Class said they would like to go back. They are constantly recalling and comparing our classroom to the visit”.

We also hold occasional Family Days at weekends for people to come and experience the Schoolroom.
